Hellbender Bed and Beverage Review – Blowing Rock, NC

While we were in Blowing Rock for three nights our friend was adamant we find somewhere for brunch. Doing a little research we settled on Hellbender Bed and Beverage located at 239 Sunset Dr in Blowing Rock, NC. Hellbender was the only reservation we didn’t have before got in town luckily we were able to snag a brunch reservation for four on Sunday at 12pm. Much like everywhere else this weekend in Blowing Rock the restaurant was packed and I doubt we would have gotten in if we had just showed up.

I wish we had taken photos of the interior of Hellbender. It was a cute kind of old timey cottage feel, although I believe we were told they were closing for 10 days for a complete remodel so don’t quote me on that. My friend and I ordered the mimosa flight which comes with a bottle of bubbly and your choice of four juices. We got orange, cranberry, grapefruit, and pomegranate juice. I hadn’t done pomegranate in a mimosa before it was actually good. The boys ordered bloody Mary’s (not pictured).

To start we ordered the fried Oysters with chow chow and tartar sauce. These oysters were fried and seasoned perfectly everyone enjoyed them.

Fair warning, by this point we were ravenous. We hadn’t eaten anything all day, except the aforementioned oysters, and we didn’t get to brunch until noon. With that said our picture taking was lax and what follows is the best I could do. I ordered a ham and cheese biscuit with raspberry jelly. My friend ordered the breakfast quesadilla with bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, cheddar, salsa verde, pico de gallo, and sour cream (not pictured, woops). My husband and his friend both ordered the Biscuits and Gravy which came with two fried eggs and sliced tomato.

Everyone enjoyed their food, the service was again excellent, and we all agreed we would do it again on our next trip to Blowing Rock.

As an aside this meal meant a little bit more than we originally anticipated. One of our favorite restaurants in Blowing Rock, Bistro Roca, suffered a catastrophic structure fire in late January just over two weeks before we came into town. We had reservations for Valentines day which for obvious reasons were cancelled.

We later heard Hellbender had absorbed some of the staff from Bistro Roca which is awesome. The brunch menu while we were there even had a shoutout at the bottom stating “Bistro Roca SH didn’t end us it gave us wings.” Make sure to stop by next time you are in Blowing Rock to support Hellbender and Bistro Roca when they rebuild, you know I will be driving over the mountain again to eat when they reopen.
